The New Kitchen

So, after all the disruption, the end result is actually very functionable and welcoming. Since the kitchen only had one north-facing window, I picked ivory as the colour for the units, with a countertop described as "Pearl Grey" which is light grey speckled with darker grey and cream.

Kitchen sink I live in a Victorian house so I went for a traditional design, but not too rustic since it's not a huge country kitchen. The wooden units can be painted over which obviously I won't have to do for years, but it's handy to have the option. You'll see there are grey tiles on the floor, and I would have had vinyl, but I wanted to try out underfloor heating, and it tends to work better with tiles since they keep the heat better. Lurking in the mid-height cupboard is my washing machine which is a narrow top-loader since there isn't room anywhere for a front-loader. Gas hob and oven since I'm used to cooking with gas, although I'm still getting used to this oven.
Sorry, this picture is a bit blurred but it's difficult to get a wide picture from that side of the kitchen without holding the camera above my head :-) In the old kitchen (which wasn't fitted but random bits of furniture) the only worktop was the corner by the door. That's still the main area for preparing things, but now I've got masses of space for dropping things down. The plate rack was one of those little features that I've always fancied, and it's actually quite practical when you've made something and are looking for a plate quickly. I have a table and chairs in the section you can't see, so I can have people round for meals. And I've already done it with my sister, and the cousin and his wife, so from now on I can be all hospitable :-)
