Last season's quotes

I've just been transferring birthdays and events from my old journal to the new one, and read over the quotes I've copied when they've particularly struck me. Here are a selection:

"Live simply that others can simply live" - Gandhi

"If you were to look up the term humanwise in a crab's dictionary, chances are it would mean sideways" - Anu Garg

"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex and more violent. It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage - to move in the opposite direction." - E.F. Schumacher

"Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground." - Anon

"When death, the great reconciler, has come, it is never our tenderness we repent of, but our severity." - George Eliot

"... because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do." - Helen Keller

"It's how the heart hungers for something that makes it beautiful." - from the film Alfie (the source surprised me when I heard it)

"She went by Malplaquet-in-the-Mould, to Maid's Malplaquet, turned left through the parishes of Gloomleigh, Marshland, and Malplaquet St Swithin's, cut across the Northampton road for Bishop's Boozey and Duke's Doddery, skirted the famous fox covert at Monk's-Unmentionable-cum-Mumble, doubled back from Bumley-Beausport to Biggle, and ate her sandwiches in the gorse patch on the round barrow at Dunamany Wenches, overlooking the drovers' road to Ort." - from Mistress Masham's Repose by T.H. White (I've been to Northamptonshire and the names are just like this :-) )
