Social Gaming

After an initial invitation from one of my niblings, I've been taking part in online games for the past few weeks - this always seems to happen around December when I guess I'm more sociable! They can have some strategy challenges, but mostly they're just clicking around exploring, getting points, acquiring virtual goods, and whacking monsters. For something that doesn't involve much thought, they're quite entertaining.

I found this interesting article yesterday. And I feel less guilty about the odd occasion I've bought some virtual goods, since once you tie it in with renting a dvd or going to a movie which are also ephemeral entertainment it starts to make sense. Also, if you're going to have a consumer society, virtual goods are better for the environment :-)
